Crayfish Spin Fly-In and official opening of the AirPark

Kräftor

In the a period of many decades altogether 15 home built aircraft have left the basements of houses around Lake Siljan to take off into the air. Presently there are a number of home builts under completion, several modifications and renovations under way, all being supervised and controlled by EEA (the Experimental Aircraft Association). With these achievements as a background Siljansnäs´ Flying Club took the initiative to arrange a local Fly-in in 1990. This was an instant success and has been repeated every year since then on the second week-end in August. The average of visiting aircrafts is around 200, many of which were highly interesting EAA-home builts. From 2006 many new visitors can come, thanks to the new 850 m asphalt runway.

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERYONE
A Fly-in is usually something for the specialists, but owners of home builts seldom object to having their gems admired by spectators. The Siljansnäs annual Fly-in is probably one of the best opportunities in Scandinavia to see a great variety of home built aircrafts as well as a number of factory built private planes.

FORMATION FLYING
The most active part of the Fly-in takes place on Friday p.m. All pilots are then invited to the traditional "Crayfish Spin". August is the month for crayfish parties in Sweden and the Saturday evening is dedicated to a crayfish dinner. The "Crayfish Spin" is the pilots´ name for that day´s joint flight around Lake Siljan. The track goes from Siljansnäs to Leksand-Tällberg-Rättvik, back to Siljansnäs and the aircrafts are divided into groups depending on their normal speed.

SPECIAL VISITORS
Among other noteworthy visitors during the past Fly-ins are the world´s largest double decker, the Russian AN-2, Stearmans, Tiger Moths and Baby Lakes, lots of ultralights and home builts. Also DC 3, J 26 Mustang, SAAB B17 and SK 15 North American Texan.

We look forward to welcome YOU to the next

On August 8, 2009 at 19:00 hrs Scandinavia's first Airpark, Siljan AirPark was officially opened. The ribbon was cut with the propeller of Siljansnäs Flying Club's Aerospool WT9 Dynamic (SE-VPS) by pilot and airfield manager Ingmar Lind and Ulrika Liljeberg, chairwoman of the City Council of Leksand Kommun.

100 years of flying in Sweden

  picture of Voisin Biplane

On July 29, 1909 the first controlled flight with engine took place in Sweden. Georges Legagneux started his Voisin bi-plane at Ladugårdsgärde in Stockholm. On August 2, 1909 he showed flying to the Swedish King Gustav V and an audience of 5.000 enthusiastic people. To memorate this history the Swedish Aviation Historical Society (Svensk Flyghistorisk Förening) and the Technical Museum (Tekniska Museet) in Stockholm created a special exhibition which officially will be opened August 26, 2009 at 18.00 hrs with public opening as per August 27.

Siljansnäs Airfield (ESVS)

In 1958 (October 31) the Siljansnäs Flying Club is founded and according to the local Falu-Kuriren newspaper the start of building the airfield started on November 5. At that time the grass runway was 624 meter. On March 19, 1959 the first plane landed, a Piper J3C-65 or so called Ahrenbergs-Cub (SE-AUF) coming from Dala-Järna with Leksand pilot Oscar Prosell. This aircraft still is in flying condition and owned and maintained by Gunilla Öhrn from Alingsås. In 1973-1974 the current clubhouse was build. The airfield is located in the Swedish province of Dalecarlia, on the southern edge of Lake Siljan. It has two parallel runways, 14/32, one is asphalt and directly beside a grass runway. Both runways are 850 meters long, the asphalt runway (new since 2006) is 16 meters wide. Elevation is 611 feet/186 meters.
Currently (as of april 2009) the airfield is owned and operated by the owners association of Siljan AirPark, consisting of the plot owners, the Siljansnäs Flying Club and the owners of the Biggles Cafe, Hultsfred Airport AB. For more information regarding flying to the airfield, please check the flyingclub's website. As per June 2009 the taxiways to the airpark plots received a new surface, asphalt.

Siljan AirPark

In the 1990's Carl Rönn started the project "School@Work" at Tullinge Airfield near Stockholm. After the first, by students build, aircraft flew he was confronted with the closure of this airfield. He was offered the possibility to restart his project in the Dalecarlia region and he visited Siljansnäs Airfield in 2002. Almost straight away he draw up some first scetches towards the now existing Siljan AirPark. In 2005 the real work on Siljan AirPark started. The plots were sold quickly and this helped funding extending excisting water, electricity and other supplies towards the site. Today the airpark consists of 44 plots and expansion plans are there. Plot owners have 11 different nationalities and on 28 plots building has started or even completed. Some plots are currently up for sale, more information can be found on Siljan AirParks website. Even today the dream of an AirPark with a social touch has not come to an end. On site is the beginning made for a Flying Circus based on WW I planes build by students. The so called "Biggles' Café" is under development.

Siljansnäs Fly-In

In 2009 The Siljansnäs Flying Club organised it's 20th "Kräftstjärtsvängen" Fly-In. This Fly-In always takes place in the weekend around the second Saturday in August. Around 135 aircrafts, many experimentals, flew in from several countries. After 15 years the DC3 (Douglas C-47B-35-DK Skytrain) 9Q-CUK was a visitor again and the possibility was offered to enjoy flying in this historical aircraft. More information about the aircraft and it's history can be found on the website of Vallentuna Aviators. Below you can find some pictures of historical, replica and modern aircraft taken at this years Fly-In. Select a picture to enlarge. To close the Saturday a garden party is held with a meal served of salmon from Lake Siljan and crayfish, this year accompanied by Siljan AirPark Cider.
